Forty Eight Hour Corvette

Classic Instruments is proud to be part of the Ridetech Forty-Eight Hour Corvette build which will take place on March 10-12, 2015. The Classic Instruments I.C.U. (Instrument Customization Unit) has been hard at work building a set of custom gauges to put “The finishing touch” on the 1972 Corvette featured in this build. Here is a behind the scenes look at what this custom job, and many others, go through to get from what they were to the spectacular centerpieces they become.

Step One

The gauges or gauge cluster is sent in by the customer with an explanation of work to be done. This may be a complete custom, a retro-fit, or a combination of the two. Once the cluster is received by Classic Instruments the expectations for the build are discussed with the customer and the job is quoted.

Step Two

The Classic Instruments graphics team creates a “graphic proof” representing what the completed gauges will look like based on the customer’s desire. The “proof” is sent to the customer and once approved, the build process begins.

Step Three

This build is going to use the original gauges from the car modified with updated electronic components and custom graphics and lighting. The gauge cluster is disassembled and re-engineered using modern electronic componentry. Mechanical components are discarded in favor of superior electronic movements that can be programmed for a wide range of applications. Classic Instruments uses our own proprietary ZST electronic componentry that allows for ease of calibration and the smoothest pointer operation in fluctuating signal environments.

Step Four

The build process begins at the bench of one of our skilled technicians. New dial faces are created, the electronic circuitry is fitted into the original gauge housing(s), lighting is upgraded and wiring done. The gauges are calibrated based on the specifications given by the customer and final assembly is completed.

Step Five

The gauge set is inspected to ensure all aspects align with the customers’ expectations. A custom wiring diagram is completed to aid in installation and the set is shipped to the customer.
